IR: Let’s get to know a little bit more about you guys and how you grew up. So where do you consider hometown and what type of kid were you growing up?

3am: Matthew is from New York City and Liz is from Toronto. Both of us consider Los Angeles our working home right now though. It’s the city we met in and where we do all the writing and recording for The 3AM.

IR: How old were you guys when you developed an interest in music?

3am: We’ve both been obsessed with music since we were in our teens. Liz really got into music during university. Matthew started playing drums in bands when he was in high school and then moved on to learning guitar and keyboards.

IR: What was the first album you ever listened to? Can you remember back that far?

3am: The very first one? Wow, that’s so hard to say. It was either Elvis or Van Morrison. Either one is a great beginning!

IR: When and how did you begin your journey in the world of music?

3am: Matthew has been playing and producing since he can remember. The first song he ever wrote was called “the fragrance is mine” which had nothing to do with perfume.
About 5 years ago Liz began songwriting and entered a few contests that she went on to win. That’s what really kickstarted her journey in music and when she began to focus on it as a career.

IR: What influences shaped 3am’s musical style?

3am: The heaviest influences come from the darker, moodier side of pop electronic. Bands like Broods, Massive Attack and Banks have had a major influence on us both.

IR: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it before?

3am: Alt-electronic pop. If you’ve ever had your heart broken, it’ll speak to you.

IR: Do you guys write a lot by yourself or do you have a partner or a group of people you work with?

3am: We write every song together. Liz sings everything. Matthew produces everything.

IR: What is The 3am’s main goal at this point?

3am: To move emotions with our songs and to continue to make music for the rest of our lives.

IR: Have you learned any lessons so far and if so, what are they?

3am: Everyone has been through hard times and if you dig deep to write songs from an honest place people will connect and respond.

IR: Are there any artists you wish to work with in the future?

3am: Oh yes. Broods, Phantogram, Massive Attack…there’s a long list.

IR: If you could create your dream tour, who would be a part of it?

3am: Working with the best of the best, like Live Nation, would be incredible. Our dream show would have spectacular multimedia and lights.

IR: Where can we find your music?

3am: Right now we are on all things digital. YouTube, iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Rdio…all of it. No CDs or vinyl are available yet.

IR: We ask all the artists we interview, what’s the best piece of advice someone’s ever given to you?

3am: Don’t stop.
